Hope In God was born in June 2016. Six years later, the group has big plans.

A small group of women came together to establish a Christian network of female survivors of child sexual abuse to support each other spiritually and emotionally. Hope in God has also worked to increase community awareness of the prevalence and lifelong adverse effects of child sexual abuse.

It feels good to be 5 and 6 years old!

This year has been remarkable for Hope In God. With the grace of God and in collaboration with our partners in Christ, we raised $8,000. This month we will dedicate the first healing circle at the Big Coulee District Center of the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate.

Then, on October 8, Divine Providence of South Dakota will co-sponsor the third annual powwow at the Joy Ranch in Watertown. Be sure to save the date and tune in for more details to follow. Both the healing circle and the powwow serve to fulfill hope in God’s purpose to continue to reach survivors of diverse cultures in our region through outreach ministries.

Beginning in January, Hope In God held several “my story” workshops designed to help men and women write their stories of adverse childhood experiences. Eight women, two teenagers and four men completed their stories. The stories will be contained in “Courageous Men and Women of the Prairie” which will be published and broadcast in November.

Thank you to the many people, companies and groups who have helped us in our work and our projects.

If you have been sexually abused, you are not alone. One in four girls and one in six boys are victims of sexual abuse before the age of 18. Sexual abuse affects children of all classes, cultures, races, religions and genders. The first silence you break is for yourself. Writing, telling and sharing your story follows. If you’ve been sexually abused, you’ve already been through the hardest part – the abuse itself. Being a survivor means you have strength.

Hope In God is a network of survivors who want to help you heal and realize that your God-given strength leads directly to determination – a steadfastness of purpose. God created you for a purpose. Hope In God Ministries serve to help survivors thrive in Jesus Christ, to become the teenagers, men and women God created you to be. God wants you to prosper and complete your journey. May God bless you abundantly!

Jo Vitek is president of Divine Providence of South Dakota.
