A doctor from Ardmore conducted a trial in postpartum patients with interesting results, which have now been published internationally.

Henry Ramirez MD, an obstetrician-obstetrician from Ardmore who specializes in helping patients improve their postpartum body through pelvic floor therapy, now uses a repurposed technique called electrical muscle stimulation (EMS). EMS has long been used to help professional athletes stimulate injured muscles to regain strength faster. Dr. Ramirez and his medical peers hypothesized that this same technique could help postpartum parents heal faster and, in some cases, reduce the need for a tummy tuck later.

According to Ramirez’s research, no matter how exciting and life-changing having a baby is, many patients feel a little less thrilled with their new tummy shape. The deformed abdomen caused by stretched muscles, muscle separation, and irregular bulges can be harmful to new parents.

The journal’s editorial board is made up of researchers and medical specialists with a wealth of research and publication experience.

The study participants were divided into an active group and a control group. Participants in the active group were asked to undergo a series of EMS treatments as well as a regular exercise program. The control group was only asked to do the regular exercise program. Both groups completed satisfactory questionnaires, measurements, and 3-step diagnostic ultrasound during the six-month treatment period.

Patients in the EMS group experienced a significant improvement in muscle structure compared to the control group. The improvement for the EMS group was significantly better than for the control group at all stages of the trial (1 month, 3 months and 6 months).

For a doctor who performs tummy tucks to help patients regain their abdominal shape, Dr Ramirez says this new protocol is life changing.

“The most common complaint in postpartum patients is how their stomachs have changed. These changes can be variable, but the majority of patients find it unpleasant. The abdominal muscles support the trunk; so many patients have back pain, bladder problems, and more. For some patients, childbirth creates lifelong pelvic and core problems, ”said Ramirez.

“Patients who have had multiple pregnancies, who are older, who gained weight during pregnancy, who have carried a large baby, or who have had a cesarean section are at particular risk of developing muscle separation, known medically as of Diastasis of recti abdominis muscle (DRAM). Our EVOLVE radio frequency system is a remarkable electrical stimulation device to promote muscle healing. “

“Patients who hated their post-baby wombs are seeing dramatic changes with EVOLVE. We now have a non-surgical way to improve muscle tone without the long healing phase and out-of-pocket costs of surgery. The results are truly life changing. “said Dr Ramirez.

Dr. Ramirez uses the Evolve system in his office for applicants of all ages. To find out if you are a good candidate or for more information, call (580) 224-9000.
