Jessica Alba explains why she is so transparent about going to therapy with her eldest, Honor, 13. ET spoke with the 40-year-old actress and founder of The Honest Company at the Baby2Baby 10th Anniversary Gala in honor of Vanessa Bryant, and she spoke about the importance of normalizing conversations about mental health .

When Alba appeared in Katherine Schwarzenegger’s Instagram series Before, during and after baby in July, she said she and Honor started attending mother-daughter therapy sessions two years ago to overcome communication barriers. Alba told ET that being a member of the Latin American community, she wants to make prioritizing mental health more palatable.

“I grew up in a family where it’s still not fully accepted,” she said. “And I think the more we break down those walls, and make it, you know, easier for people to understand and accept that it’s just about introducing yourself to your family members or to yourself. a different way, and trying to be better. Be better tomorrow than you were today, you know? “

Alba said her Honest Company will donate 10 million items to Baby2Baby – a non-profit organization that provides children living in poverty with diapers, clothing and other essentials – during the next year, and has already donated 26 million items. Alba has a long relationship with Baby2Baby co-CEOs Kelly Sawyer Patricof and Norah Weinstein, and said from day one she was committed to The Honest Company giving back.

“Fortunately, I had Kelly and Norah as girlfriends, moms friends, we were in baby class together,” she shared. “And while I was thinking, you know, the dream business, I knew I could really trust partnering with them and pushing this mission forward to really deliver these essentials for babies and families, not for people who can just afford it, but also, for those who cannot afford it. “

During Alba’s candid conversation with Schwarzenegger in July, she spoke about some of the positive things that came out of therapy with Honor. Alba shares three children with her husband, Cash Warren, including Haven, 10, and Hayes, 3.

“Like my 13-year-old daughter, I find it hard not to treat her like a little one – I want to treat them all like babies. I want to keep them,” she shared. “I always tend to raise them like they are little. I started in therapy with her, I think, when she was 11. I didn’t know how to communicate with me and how I needed it. to be a parent So I didn’t want this breakup with Honor so we went to therapy together.

Alba said Honor felt empowered to open up to her during their therapy sessions, including telling her mother what she liked and didn’t like.
